Can you get Botox or other neurotoxin injections while pregnant?

Neurotoxin treatments are not recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding because safety has not been established for these populations. The FDA prescribing labels for all botulinum toxin type A products list pregnancy as a contraindication. Patients who are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or currently breastfeeding should wait until after these periods to receive neurotoxin injections.

What does it feel like to get neurotoxin injections?

Most patients describe neurotoxin injections as a mild pinching sensation rather than significant pain. The needles used are extremely fine – typically 30 to 32 gauge – and the entire procedure usually takes 10 to 20 minutes. Many providers apply topical numbing cream or ice beforehand to maximize comfort. Any discomfort is brief and resolves immediately after each injection.

How quickly do neurotoxin injections start working?

Neurotoxin injections begin working within one to seven days depending on the product. Daxxify has the fastest onset at one to two days, Dysport typically takes two to five days, and Botox takes three to seven days with full results developing over 10 to 14 days. Patients should wait a full two weeks before assessing final results or requesting any adjustments from their provider.

Will my wrinkles get worse if I stop getting neurotoxin treatments?

Stopping neurotoxin treatments does not make wrinkles worse than they would have been without treatment. When injections are discontinued, the targeted muscles gradually return to full function over several months, and wrinkles resume their natural aging progression. Many patients who take a break actually notice their skin looks better than before they started because the muscles have been at rest for an extended period.
